Sarteneja Village
Sarteneja has certainly earned its name as a fishing community-over ninety percent of the mostly Mestizo residents make their livelihood from the sea. Sailboats called lighters carry up to fifteen fisherman on extended, long-distance fishing trips following the line of the reef to take advantage of seasonably available species of fish, shrimp, conch and lobster all the way to Honduras. In line with their maritime tradition, residents hold an annual regatta at Easter. Corozal District is a haven for retirees from Europe and North America, and although it is not on the main tourist routes, if offers many activities, such as a sport fishing, Maya sites or bird-watching at Shipstern Nature Reserve.
