Belize now has two investor residency options to know about: an existing US$250,000 temporary residence route for people with substantial investments in Belize, and a proposed US$500,000 investor residence permit that is going through the National Assembly. This guide explains both. Last updated October 2026.
The US$250,000 route: temporary residence for investors
Short answer: It is Belize’s existing Temporary Residence status. The Immigration Department grants it to people who show investments in Belize worth at least US$250,000 but cannot meet the normal one-year stay required for permanent residence. It is granted for one year at a time and is renewable.
According to the Belize Immigration Department, temporary residence is meant for people who have made, or are making, a substantial commercial investment in Belize but whose commitments abroad keep them from meeting the ordinary permanent residence rules. Applicants must show evidence of investments in Belize valued at no less than US$250,000. Cabinet’s December 2025 approval of an Investor Residency Program was also reported at US$250,000 of commercial investment (US State Department 2026 Investment Climate Statement).
The proposed US$500,000 investor residence permit
Short answer: The Immigration Amendment Bill, 2026, introduced on October 2, 2026, would create an investor residence permit for people who invest at least US$500,000 in a new Belize business. Instead of about 351 days in one year, investors would need a cumulative year in Belize over two and a half to three and a half years.
Immigration Minister Kareem Musa introduced the Immigration Amendment Bill, 2026 and the Belizean Nationality Amendment Bill, 2026 on October 2, 2026. Eligible family members could apply alongside the investor; applicants would provide evidence of the investment, police records and business information; and permits could be revoked for false information or if conditions stop being met (The San Pedro Sun). The companion nationality bill would let investor permit holders go on to apply for permanent residence (Love FM).
Is the US$500,000 program in effect?
Short answer: Not yet. Cabinet approved an investor residency framework in December 2025, and the bill was introduced in the House in October 2026, but it still has to pass and come into force. Until then, the US$250,000 temporary residence route, QRP and standard permanent residence are the options available.
Other residency options
- Qualified Retirement Program (QRP): for applicants aged 40 or older with at least US$2,000 a month in retirement income from outside Belize, with tax exemption on that foreign income. QRP members can carry on a business only with Belize Tourism Board approval, which requires at least US$500,000 of investment and five Belizean employees (Belize Tourism Board).
- Standard permanent residence: one year of legal residence in Belize without leaving for more than 14 days, then an application to the Belize Immigration Department.
Buying property does not by itself give you residency or the right to work, but foreigners can own Belize real estate with the same rights as citizens. See can foreigners buy property in Belize, what QRP is and businesses for sale in Belize.
Which route fits you?
If you already hold, or plan to make, at least US$250,000 of investments in Belize and cannot stay a full year, temporary residence is available today. If you plan a larger new business and want a flexible path to permanent residence, follow the US$500,000 bill’s progress. Either way, talk to a Belize immigration attorney before committing funds.
